Every month in my SRP bill I receive a newsletter. I am not sure how many of you read this, but I do! I came across the following tip, “String Lights with Care” in the November issue and I thought it would be good information to share with my readers that are getting ready to decorate for the holiday season.
- Check for broken sockets, loose connections or bare wires. Discard all damaged light sets.
- Indoor or out, use lights and extension cords with the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label only
- Don’t overload outlets or extension cords.
- Reduce the risk of fire by switching to decorative light strings that use light-emitting diode (LED) technology.
LED decorative lights are cool to the touch, so they are safer indoor or out. LED’s with the Energy Star mark consume 90% less energy than conventional incandescent strands and can last up to 10 times longer. LED’s do not have filaments or glass, so they are much more durable than conventional light strings.
